Reality Check

One of my cousins is getting married this weekend. Which means a huge family reunion, a mad scramble to find a dress and shoes, and a sudden overwhelming desire for a slimmer profile (for the family photo albums).

Which means a cranky Nida for the past week and a half. Because I usually prefer to manage my weight by increasing the amount of working out I do, I’ve never really gone on a diet. Also because dieting sucks a mighty megatron.

I’m trying to drop a couple pounds the old-fashioned way – diet and exercise and a free iPhone app called Lose It. The app is great in that it keeps track of my calorie intake and lets me know a rough estimate of the fiber, fat, sodium, cholesterol and protein I get on a daily basis. It might also be singlehandedly responsible for my buying more fruits and veggies…it is really hard to get enough fiber in your diet.

It also means that I’ve also switched around my reality TV intake – I am temporarily off Top Chef (too tempting) and onto Biggest Loser. (Another bad show to watch while on a diet is Pushing Daisies, which involves a character known as the Piemaker (or Ned) and his Pie Hole. Mmmm…pie….) Not sure the Biggest Loser is a great motivator for me though….Watching morbidly obese people get screamed at? Fun times but that only takes up 10 minutes of a 2 hour show. I know that it’s a competitive reality show and all that but you can’t sob about “the journey” you’re on during one 6-minute segment and then down 700 calorie cupcakes during a temptation challenge in the next and get me fired up about weight loss. I suppose wondering about how to up your fiber intake doesn’t make for stimulating TV.

(Also a bad show to watch while dieting? Golden Girls. Those chicks ate a lot of cheesecake. And cookies. And ice cream. And pasta. And regular cake.)
